The new guy Andy Robertson has found his chances in Jurgen Klopp's team limited so far this year but acknowledges that the team has a back problem and needs to work quickly to change things.
In the six Premier League games played so far the Reds have sent 11 goals while scoring 12, and Robertson admits things have to change if the club is going to be successful this season.
"I think as a group we can get better on the defensive and I can be a part of that," Robertson told the club's official website.
The Scottish international believes that responsibility should not be simply on the defenders of the squad, but on the entire body of players as a whole.
"As a group we have to work together to get better on the defensive because if midfielders can help us and the strikers can help us, then as a team we will improve," Robertson said.
"The threat we have in the future, counterattacks are sometimes frightening.
"So if we can prop it up in the back and do not concede dumb goals and do not turn it off, then we will be a big force," he added.
Robertson has yet to appear in Liverpool since Leicester City League Cup exit a few weeks ago.
The 23-year-old Glaswegian has been used sparingly by Klopp so far, despite being widely expected to become the first choice left after his move to Anfield.
The position was problematic for the Reds last season, with orthodox midfielder James Milner filling him in the back throughout the campaign.
The first few weeks of the season have seen something of a revival for Spanish defender Alberto Moreno, who has re-entered the starting XI and has received accolades for his attack initiative during Liverpool's recent draw with Spartak Moscow.
