In an attempt to curb traffic blockades on Lagos' roads, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, said on Sunday it had hired more than 1,400 new graduate traffic managers.
LASTMA CEO Chris Olakpe told the Nigeria News Agency that new officials were trained in the effectiveness of traffic management within the metropolis of Lagos.
Mr Olakpe said that a number of guidance and training programs were in place for LASTMA officials on traffic control and management to ensure professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
"Workouts are under way to catch former officials inside the state to mix with new hires.
"About 1,400 new officials were recently recruited and trained to bring improvements, discipline and curb blockades within the state.
"We have about 4,250 LASTMA officials to ensure the free flow of traffic on several routes in the state of Lagos," he said.
The chief of LASTMA said that officials were trained in the protocol of detention, surveillance and traffic management.
Mr. Olakpe added that there were several disciplinary departments in the agency to punish any official who is found to be in the line of duty.
"We have departments and sections that deal with discipline such as the provost marshal's office, the monitoring and monitoring unit and the LASTMA complaint units.
"All these sections are in a position to deal with any official who disobeys the rules and regulations of the authority," he said.
NAN reports that eight LASTMA officials were dismissed on 14 August for receiving bribes.
The LASTMA executive said that the authority had been working asiduously to reduce the gridlocks in Apapa and its environs.
He said the agency had established "Operation Keep Traffic Movement" to alleviate blockades in Apapa and other parts of the metropolis of Lagos.
"LASTMA has been helping the traffic movement in Apapa trying to streamline traffic
