In 2001, Safiya Hussaini was sentenced to death by a Sharia Court in Sokoto. She was accused of committing adultery with her neighbour after her husband divorced her. The child she had after her divorce was also said to be from her affair with her neighbour.Nigerian human rights lawyer Hauwa Ibrahim took up her case in court and brought up new arguments to counter the sentencing. The case was dismissed in 2002
Faruk Mohammed Yabo a journalist with DW Radio Hausa Service recently had a chat with her and her daughter who is now a teenager.
She explained that she was a victim of rape by her neighbour, she also said she was already pregnant before the divorce. Her claims were dismissed for lack of evidence and the Sharia courts went on to sentence her to death. The neighbour was never tried or convicted of any wrong doing.
Her case attracted many local and international human rights organisations who launched campaigns and fought her case.
