The Lagos State Government has announced a bold move to ban the use of single-use plastics and sachet water starting in January 2025. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, revealed the upcoming ban during a stakeholders' workshop focused on eliminating Styrofoam and single-use plastics (SUPs) for packaging.

This initiative is part of Lagos’ broader environmental policy aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting a healthier, more sustainable future. However, concerns are mounting among stakeholders, who are urging the government to implement the ban in phases to ease the burden during the current economic crisis.

Mosaku Ololade, Chairperson of the Lagos chapter of the Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP), confirmed their readiness to cooperate, noting that the association has been working closely with the state to prepare its members for the transition.

Mosaku Ololade, Chairperson of the Lagos chapter of the Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP), emphasised the association’s willingness to cooperate with the government. “We’ve been engaging with the state government and educating our members on the planned ban,” Ololade said.
