More Than 49 dead as strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico City

#Nigeria
49+ people reportedly killed on Tuesday, September 19th, as 7.1 magnitude temblor shook Mexico, causing the building to shake and crash. The catastrophe coincides with the anniversary of the deadly earthquake in 1985, shaken by central Mexico. Earthquake on Tuesday struck at 14:14. Just a few hours after the siren signaled the annual wells in Mexico City, the earth began to shake, the walls were thrown, and the inhabitants fled the streets. There were reports of fires and gas leaks. Governor Graco Ramirez tweeted that at least 42 people were killed in Morelos, south of Mexico City. At least five people died in the state of Mexico, surrounding the capital, according to media reports quoted by Governor Alfred del Mazo. Two others died in the central state of Puebla after the school collapsed, said Fernando Clemente, a civil servant in the state, Reuters reported. Several people were drawn from the ruins in the Mexican capital, while others feared captured. Local radio in the city of Cuernavaca, capital of Morelos, located about 35 miles south of Mexico City, also reported that people were thrust under crashed buildings there, according to Reuters. The main freeway connecting Cuernavaca with Mexico City also looked very damaged, according to the photos that circulated on social media.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was 76 miles southeast of the capital, near the town of Raboso in Puebla.
Photos showed collapsed buildings in Mexico City. It also showed emergency workers in yellow hard hats as they scrambled over mountains of debris — twisted metal beams, chunks of plaster and broken glass — where structures had once stood. Cars were nearly buried in rubble. Residents were seen embracing and crying in the streets after they raced out of their homes.
At the Clínica Gabriel Mancera in Mexico City, more than a dozen hospital beds had been set up in the patio outside as a triage center for the injured. Leticia Gonzalez, a 45-year-old maid in a nearby apartment building, said that she tried to race out of the building but that concrete crashed down as she fled. Her right leg was wrapped in a bandage as she grimaced in pain outside the hospital.
"We were all running like crazy," she said. "This was the worst earthquake I've ever seen."
Marisela Avila Gomez, 58, was in her apartment in the central Narvarte neighborhood in the capital when the shaking began, toppling her furniture and shattering the windows. A piece of glass sliced deep into her right leg.
I lost about three liters of blood," she said. "My whole house is full of blood."
Her husband, Francisco Vicente Lozada Garcia, a 55-year-old landscaper, tried to drive across town to get to his wife, but traffic was snarled and the "street felt like gelatin."
The couple eventually made it to the Clinica Gabriel Mancera, where Avila Gomez was treated.
"I'm afraid to return home but I don't have anywhere else to go," she said. "I'm afraid of aftershocks."
Classes were suspended at schools in a large swath of central Mexico. Patients were evacuated from damaged hospitals. The Mexico City airport was closed as authorities looked for damage. In the southern Mexico City neighborhood of Coyoacan, the walls of colonial-era buildings cracked and sagged, with some collapsing into rubble. At the Barricas Don Tiburcio shop, shelves bearing food crashed down and wine bottles shattered on the floors.
"This is the worst one I have ever felt," shopkeeper Beatriz Aguilar Bustamante said.
In a Twitter message Tuesday after receiving news of the quake, President Trump wrote: "God bless the people of Mexico City. We are with you and will be there for you."
