Huggies maker, Kimberly-Clark to stop production three years after investing $100m in Nigeria

Nairametrics reports that Diaper and sanitary pad manufacturer, Kimberley Clark will soon announce an imminent shutdown of its Ikorodu production facility two years after investing $100 million in Nigeria.  Sources within the company informed Nairametrics that the plant has been producing below capacity from late 2023 into 2024 due to the harsh economic environment within the country.  

 

In 2022, the company inaugurated a $100 million production facility in Ikorodu, Lagos state to restart operations after a similar closure of operations in 2019 following a strategic review of its business.Kimberly-Clark began operations in Nigeria in 2012 but stopped due to unfavourable economic conditions after five years in 2019 to later restart in 2021.  The company produces Huggies diapers, sanitary pads, Kotex and other hygiene and personal care products. KC is a listed multinational on the New York Stock Exchange with the majority of its shares held by institutional investors like Blackrock Inc., Vanguard Group, Morgan Stanley etc. 

 

 According to the source who claimed anonymity, the company since late 2022 have battled with high energy costs, raw materials and reduced demand from customers due to the prevailing economic situation.This has resulted in downsizing and reduced production time from every day of the week to just Mondays to Thursdays.  The company currently spends around N100 million on power generation monthly aside from maintenance costs and its monthly fixed spend on operations has risen over N500 million.

Guinness announces it will exit the Nigerian market and sell off its controlling shares to Singaporean conglomerate Tolaram Group on Tuesday, June 11.

Guinness has joined a long list of multinationals, like GlaxoSmithKline and Microsoft, that have left Nigeria, citing the harsh economic climate in the country. The brewery company recorded a staggering N61.9 billion loss after tax between July 2023 and March 2024, just a few months after Mr Tinubu floated the naira in an effort to unify the currency’s value on the official and parallel foreign exchange markets.

 

 

Guinness Nigeria’s N61.7 billion loss after tax in Q3 was a 1,000 percent decrease from the N5.9 billion profit generated in the same period last year leading Diageo, Guinness’ parent company, to sell its 58.02 per cent majority stake to the Singaporean group.“Under the terms of an agreement signed today, 11 June 2024, Tolaram will acquire Diageo’s 58.02% shareholding in Guinness Nigeria royalty agreements for the continued production of the Guinness brand and its locally manufactured Diageo ready-to-drink and mainstream spirits brands,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

 

 

 “The transaction is expected to be completed during fiscal 2025, subject to obtaining the requisite regulatory approvals in Nigeria,” said the statement signed by Abidemi Ademola, Guinness’s legal director.Diageo “will retain ownership of the Guinness brand, which will be licensed to Guinness Nigeria for the long term.”

Comedian, I go save, has reacted to the Federal Government’s decision to return to the old National Anthem, suggesting that it would be logical to also revert to previous prices of petrol, dollar, and taxation, as well as previous security standards

The former youth leader of Living Faith's Church claims that it began when he turned on the TV and saw pornography, which he thankfully was able to avoid with God's assistance.

Isaac emphasized the significance of having a conversation about these matters and pointed out that many people—including pastors and churchgoers—continue to experience such difficulties.

He pointed out that experiencing anointing and miracles does not imply a person is a sincere believer.

“My confessions are good ones that will help people. I struggled with pornography before.

The woman stated that she had never witnessed people of different faiths giving sermons in buses or public areas.
