The first trailer for Zac Efron’s new film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, has dropped.
The film, which is premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, will feature Zac Efron as Ted Bundy, one of the most infamous serial killers in the United States who was responsible for the deaths and sexual assaults of more than 30 women. Bundy was executed in Florida in 1989 following his trial.
In the one-and-a-half-minute trailer, viewers are shown snippets of Bundy’s arrest, court appearances, and time in prison, seemingly through the lens of his relationship with his girlfriend, Liz Kloepfer (portrayed by Lily Collins).
In an interview with Variety, the actor explained that he has a "responsibility" to ensure that Extremely Wicked isn't a "celebration" of Bundy. “Or a glorification of him,” Zac added. “But, definitely, a psychological study of who this person was. In that, there’s honesty."
In preparing for the role, Zac told Variety that he interviewed several people who knew Bundy in real life. “They could not believe that such a strait-laced, pleasant, smart, smiling, calm individual was responsible for such horrendous, horrific crimes,” the actor said.Similarly, director Joe Berlinger (who also directed Netflix’s Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes) told Vulture that both projects aim to dismantle stereotypes about serial killers. “We want to think these are two-dimensional human beings,” Berlinger said. “We want to think they’re easily identifiable in society. But Bundy himself says, ‘Killers don’t come out of the shadows with long fangs and blood dripping off their chin. They’re people you know that you like, that you admire.’” (It’s logic not unlike what we heard in the discourse surrounding Netflix’s popular series You — and part of why that show’s central character also elicited such conflicting reactions from viewers.)
