Worker kills boss for refusing to increase salary in UAE
According to court documents, the defendant was told that his salary would be increased from Dh1,000 to Dh1,500 per month. However, the Pakistani employer was reportedly "reluctant" to give the additional amount. The defendant went to a shop with his friend and bought a meat cleaver. He then phoned his boss for a meeting. "He told his boss that he wanted to go to a remote area in the city outskirts to pick something from a friend, but needed his help to get there," court records showed.
As they travelled in the boss' car, the defendant pulled out the meat cleaver from underneath his clothes and hit the boss on the head and neck, which caused his death. "The defendant then drove the car and parked it on the roadside, leaving the deceased inside. The worker also took the victim's two mobile phones and laptop and fled the scene." The following morning, he went to his work place as usual. Municipal workers discovered the body in the parked car and informed the police. Investigations led the cops to the defendant.
"The CCTV cameras at the store from where the defendant bought the murder weapon helped the authorities identify the killer." When questioned, the defendant initially told the police he bought the cleaver "for personal safety". However, he later confessed to having killed his boss. The man denied the murder charge when he appeared in court. The trial was adjourned until October 29.
October 31 remains the last day of the 3 month amnesty in the UAE unless otherwise announced officially by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, a top official said quashing rumours that a deadline extension is in the pipeline.
Talks of an amnesty extension are unfounded, said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Al Dallal, spokesperson at the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) of the Ministry of Interior said on Monday.
“There is no official decision to extend the amnesty period yet. If there are any plans for extension, it will be announced by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship,” Lt. Col. Al Dallal toldGulf News.
The amnesty period has given illegal foreigners the chance to legalise their residency status or leave the country without having to pay their overstay fines or getting a ban since it began on August 1. Lt. Col. Al Dallal also denied rumours that amnesty centres in some parts of the country have stopped accepting applications for amnesty ahead of the October 31 deadline.
“All amnesty centres, including Tasheel and Amer centres, in the country accept applications from illegal residents who turn up to regularise their residency status or leave the country without paying fines,” he clarified. “This information of not accepting applications is rumoured among people. It’s baseless. I would like to tell people that all amnesty seekers are welcome across the country’s amnesty centres until October 31, the deadline set by the federal authorities,” he added.
The rumour was spread by illegal residents who approached typing centres and failed to understand the procedures hence they thought that the amnesty centre had started refusing to accept applications, Lt. Col. Al Dallal said. Large numbers of amnesty seekers have started flocking the centres as the deadline nears, he added.

University professor, Frank Onyezili commits suicide in Benue
A Professor of Biological Science with the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi, Frank Onyezili has committed suicide.
It was learnt that the deceased’s decision to end his own life might not be unconnected with depression and loneliness which he was believed to have suffered lately because his family (wife and children) are said to be living abroad. Onyezili took his own life at the weekend by drinking a substance suspected to be poison after leaving behind a suicide note. A colleague of the deceased, who wouldn’t want his name mentioned, told journalists that the family of Onyezili had abandoned him and that could have been the reason he decided to end it all. The Director of Protocol and Information of the university, Mrs Roseline Waku, confirmed the incident but said she was not privy to the information contained in the suicide note. When contacted, the Police Spokesman of the Benue Command, DSP Moses Joel Yamu, said he was yet to get the detail of the incident as of the time of this report.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) signed a deal with telecoms network to equip all of the city's taxis with the service across the city. Riders will be able to connect their phones, tablets and other handheld devices to the wi-fi to access the internet totally free of charge. It is hoped that the service will be installed in all vehicles within one year, with the project set to start immediately. Ahmad Hashem Behroozian, chief executive of RTA, said:
“According to the agreement, du will start fitting the required devices to taxis. “All fleet vehicles of the six franchise companies operating in Dubai will be covered by the service within one year from the date of signing this agreement.” The initiative is part of efforts to make Dubai the smartest city in the world, which is something we can totally get behind.

A white woman who was filmed blocking a black man from entering the St. Louis loft building where they live has denied that she is racist and says she was concerned for her safety.
Hilary Brooke Thornton, 32, was fired from her job as a realtor after footage of her confronting D'Arreion Toles at their luxury condo building in Missouri City went viral.
Toles said he was coming home from work on Friday night when Thornton physically blocked him from entering. The 24-year-old filmed the incident as Thornton, who was holding a glittery phone and her dog on a leash, demanded to know what apartment he lived in.
Thornton has now spoken out about the ordeal, telling DailyMailTV's affiliate Fox2 that her neighbor didn't have an electronic key fob and forced his way inside. She said she had the front door cracked to let her dog use the bathroom when Toles approached and tried to get into the building.
Thornton claims she was only following the condo board's instructions to not allow strangers inside when she repeatedly asked whether he lived there.
'I simply asked if he lived there because the direction from the association is… that if you don't know the person, you don't let them in,' she said.
Thornton said she told Toles she couldn't let him in and asked if he had a security key fob. 'It's the only indicator any resident has that they live in the building and he wouldn't answer me. He would not show me one,' she said.
In the video, Toles can be heard saying: 'You're blocking me into my building, it's my building as well, so can you just get out of my way. I live here and your blocking my way. I've already buzzed in.' Thornton, who says she's been getting death threats since the video went viral, has denied she is racist. 'That's false and heartbreaking. Those are words that cut deep,' she said of the claims she is racist.

According to Sahara Reporters,he said that the suspect wanted to sleep with one of the victims (boys) a second time when the elderly one raised alarm and he was apprehended by a group of vigilante. .
According to him, the incident occurred at Oja-Oshodi area in Akure metropolis, from where he was taken to the palace of Deji of Akure, where he was later handed over to the command for investigations. .

Facebook Blocks Iran Bid To Sway US, British Politics
Facebook has taken down accounts linked to an Iranian effort to influence US and British politics with messages about charged topics such as immigration and race relations.
The social network identified 82 pages, groups and accounts that originated in Iran and violated policy on coordinated "inauthentic" behavior, Facebook head of cybersecurity policy Nathaniel Gleicher said.
Gleicher said there was overlap with accounts taken down earlier this year and linked to Iran state media, but the identity of the culprits had yet to be determined.
"It´s often hard to know who is behind this type of activity," Gleicher said in a briefing.
Account owners tried to hide their identities by passing themselves off mostly as US citizens, and in a few cases as British citizens, according to Gleicher.
Posts on the accounts or pages, which included some hosted by Facebook-owned Instagram, focused mostly on "sowing discord" via strongly divisive issues rather than on particular candidates or campaigns.
Accounts and pages dated back several years, but most of the online activity took place in the past year, according to Facebook.
The campaign involved the purchase of two online ads, costing a total of $100 paid for in US and Canadian currencies, the first of which ran in June of 2016 and the second of which ran at the start of this year.
The purge involved 30 pages, 33 accounts and three groups at Facebook, as well as 16 accounts at Instagram.

2 new buildings allegedly owned by former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose have been sealed by agents of the state government.
The state government through the Ministry of Housing, Urban and Physical Development, said the twin duplexes were sealed for lack of approved plan and permit.
The buildings, which are adjacent the official residence of the Deputy Governor, are located in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Ado-Ekiti within the precincts of the Government House.
The contractor handling the project began work about four months ago after the buildings erected on the plot were pulled down to give way for the new edifices.
The official seal closing down the buildings was pasted on the gate.
The seal shutting down the buildings was signed by the Director of Urban and Regional Planning in the Ministry of Housing, Urban and Physical Development.
The document reads: “It was discovered during inspection by the Inspectorate staff of our Ministry that a residential building by you at GRA has no approved plan /permit for the site or bring same to our office to get certification for the erection.
“You are hereby ordered to suspend the use of the building premises until approved plan is submitted for clearance.”

“The property in question does not belong to Fayose. Fayemi’s government should produce evidence linking the former government to the property.
“Fayose has said he was ready for probe and that he will appear in person before any panel set up by Fayemi. So, why the desperation?
“Our advice is that, Fayemi should place high premium on payment of the workers’ salary arrears since N30bn is already in his custody released by the Federal Government and not embarking on witch hunting or disparaging his predecessor. The money should not be used to fund the election petition filed against him.
“He should hurry up to do all he could for the benefit of common Ekiti people because time is not on his side.”

Air Peace releases statement on Lagos-Owerri Flight Incident
The management of Air Peace has released a statement after its aircraft flying to Owerri from Lagos, had to return to the Lagos airport after take off.
A twitter user@VikkiAngelX had published a series of tweets, narrating what happened on the flight. The tweets read:
Today, a plane leaving Lagos for owerri left at 10am and landed back in Lagos at around 12:30. Twenty minutes after the take off the plane dropped suddenly (like your phone falling from your hand) to a lower altitude.
People screamed and after a while the pilot announced that he didn’t have enough fuel to continue to Owerri. And so the plane turned back to Lagos flying at a much lower altitude. Low enough to see the ground all the way back to Lagos. Making the journey over 2 hours
I don’t know what’s going on but (Air Peace) and the Nigerian aviation are using lives to play chess. This completely shook my day cos my mother was on that plane . Someone who hates flying and is hypertensive. She had to purposely stay calm or risk losing her life either way.

Inthe statement signed by Chris Iwarah, its Corporate Communications Manager, the airline confirmed the incident, saying “Air Peace Lagos-Owerri Flight 7252 on Thursday returned to base after our crew observed that there was a change in cabin pressure”.
“In line with our standard operating procedure, the captain-in-command descended to a level where it would be comfortable for our valued guests, before making a return to base in line with global best practices in the aviation industry.
We wish to assure members of the public that the incident had nothing whatsoever to do with the engines of the aircraft nor was it a life-threatening situation.
The aircraft has since been thoroughly checked and confirmed serviceable. The aircraft went back into operations in less than an hour after going for maintenance checks.
Air Peace is renowned for its quality maintenance reputation and we assure members of the flying public that we will continue to sustain the high standards of our flight operations and professionalism to guarantee the safety of our valued guests and crew,” the statement added.

"I'm very proud of it," the Apple CEO told Christiane Amanpour on Wednesday in an exclusive interview for her program on CNN. Being gay is "God's greatest gift to me," he said.
Cook came out on October 30, 2014. His sexual orientation had been widely rumored beforehand though he had not confirmed it publicly. "I was public because I started to receive stories from kids who read online that I was gay," he told Amanpour.
Cook said he is a private person but ultimately decided that he was being "selfish" by keeping quiet about his identity when he could help people by coming out.
"I needed to do something for them", I wanted to demonstrate to gay children that they "can be gay and still go on and do some big jobs in life." Cook said he was shocked that he was the first out CEO of a Fortune 500 company. He said he is glad other CEOs have come out since, although that wasn't his goal.
