Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a Ramadan dinner that the carpool company's business is "over" in the country, with the Interior Ministry apparently giving "orders".
Uber currently runs a license that costs much less than taxi plates (about US $ 760 instead of $ 360,000), but Erdogan argued that it was "impossible" to offer a taxi alternative with this less expensive option.
Its service continues to operate in Turkey to date, although a hearing is scheduled for 4 June. Critics are not entirely convinced that there will be a shutdown, though - an Uber operator speaking to Bloomberg called an anti-Uber crackdown an "election pledge" that did not carry much weight.
If there is a ban, it would compound Uber’s ongoing problems finding acceptance abroad.
