Misan Riwane is the founder of Western African Vocational Training, a new vocational education program that seeks to link her graduate students to jobs within six to eight weeks of the end of the program. Born and raised in Nigeria, Misan was upset about the differences between the educational opportunities abroad and the untapped potential of millions of young Africans after studying in the United Kingdom and the United States. Misan, while at Harvard Business School for his MBA, met his WAVE co-founders from other African countries who were also concerned about the youth unemployment situation in Africa and WAVE started. Although one of Nigeria's challenges in the education sector is lack of skills training needed to work in affordable jobs, Misan has decided to do something. WAVE bridges the gap between unemployed African youth and stable jobs in the fastest growing industry, including hospitality and retail. WAVE trains young adults in time, conflict resolution, management and team communication through lessons and playing roles before the two-week placement with the business partners they use as partners. In some cases it leads to work. By 2019, WAVE aims to train 25,000 young people annually in marketable skills to reach their true potential and support them on stable jobs.
