Bangladesh will move to the camp of at least 15,000 refugees from Rohingye who settled in a decisive mountain neighborhood near the border with Myanmar, the local official said on Sunday.
Most of the estimated half a million of Rohingya, who came to Southeast Bangladesh in the last five weeks after escaping from violence in Myanmar, were overwhelmed by camps that appeared on a state-owned land.
But thousands of mostly Muslim refugees settled in the nearby district of Bandarban, part of Chittagong Hill Tracts, where indigenous tribes led the separatist rebellion in the 1980s and 1990s.
The Bangladesh authorities fear that their presence may revive communal tensions between the local Muslim population and tribal minorities, who are mostly Buddhist.
"The government has now decided to switch all 15,000 newly-opened Rohingya to the main camp," said AFP Bandarbanin government administrator Dilip Kumar Banik.
Banik said the government would begin moving on Monday to "ensure peace on the hillside."
Bangladesh opened its borders to Rohingy, who denied nationality in their native China.
But he did not give them the official status of refugees, and he clearly did not want them to stay indefinitely.
Authorities restricted the movement of refugees, banning them from abandoning overcrowded camps where hundreds of thousands of people live in desperate conditions with inadequate shelter.
Banik said the government also wanted to move around 12,000 Rohingya that were stranded in the nearby Iraqi land between Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Tribal groups ended in 1997 with a separatist rebellion and signed a peace agreement with the government.
But there is persistence between local Muslim populations and tribal groups who have close ties to ethnic Rhaetian Buddhists, accused of executing an attack on Rohingya in Myanmar.
In June this year, local Muslims burned hundreds of houses into the tribal community after the alleged murder of a local politician.
And in May last year, a 75-year-old Buddhist monk was found dead in Bandarban, an attack that was later claimed by an Islamic state group.
